Marco Rubio stated this Friday that all trade negotiations with Canadian authorities had been halted following Canada's government shared via social platforms a 5-minute clip of a 1987 address by President Reagan denouncing trade barriers that seemed to spark Donald Trump's anger.
The leader of Ontario, Premier Ford, whose government aired the Reagan commercial in US markets this week, posted on social media that the two nations are "stronger together", while President Trump posted his own string of social media posts promoting the supposed benefits of import taxes.
"Our neighbor and the United States are friends, neighbours and allies. Leader Reagan knew that we are better united," the Ontario premier stated with the Reagan clip. "Bless our nation and bless the United States of America."
The deterioration in relationships apparently stems from a 60-second TV commercial including Reagan's broadcast declaring that "tariffs hurt all US workers"
The President reacted on Truth Social without proof that Canadian officials had in some way run a "fraudulent" and "false" advertisement, and declared that "all trade negotiations with Canada are officially ended"
Secretary Rubio, the secretary of state, on Friday informed journalists that Ford had broadcast advertisements in the United States which "took Reagan's statements out of context," noting that the Reagan Foundation had questioned the campaign, too
The Reagan Foundation said Thursday that the Ontario government's advertisement "misrepresents" Reagan's speech, without elaborating in what way
The premier's team answered by resharing the extended, five-minute segment, and said that the advertisement features "an unedited excerpt from a Reagan public addresses, which is available through public domain"
Democratic lawmakers on the House committee jumped in to support the Ontario advertisement
"Here is the commercial that prompted the President to terminate all trade talks with Canada," the committee posted online
The conflict comes as each country face critical dates in the next few weeks
An expert, the director of the Center for Canadian Studies at Johns Hopkins School, indicated the collapse in talks simply makes official a unproductive situation
"Should we halt negotiations? Yes, you can stop discussions about metals, aluminum, energy, everything," he stated
The analyst pointed out the irony of Trump referencing his predecessor while undoing his trade legacy
"The former president loved the country – he loved free trade. Perhaps Donald Trump thinks that, but it's not his current position today"
The US government implemented 25 percent duties on goods from Canada earlier this year, leading to countermeasures from Canada before the administration raised duties to 35% in the summer
The province, reliant on cross-border production and auto commerce, has been especially impacted
The collapse finally puts the prime minister managing domestic pressure with a coalition government
"Carney is trying to keep all the provinces united," the expert commented
